Andy Appiah-Kubi, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, has expressed deep concerns regarding the escalating political tension within Ghana’s Parliament, which he attributes to immature behaviour displayed by members of both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Appiah-Kubi criticised what he described as childish antics that have dominated parliamentary discourse, particularly following a recent decision by the Speaker of Parliament to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision sparked a scramble for majority status, with both parties jostling for dominance in the legislative body. This power struggle, Appiah-Kubi argues has led to unnecessary confrontations that serve neither the interests of Parliament nor the public.
In an engagement with journalists, Appiah-Kubi spoke of the need for unity and diplomacy within Parliament to resolve what he sees as a looming constitutional crisis.
Appiah-Kubi was clear in his belief that, rather than resorting to public spectacles and divisive tactics, lawmakers should focus on constructive dialogue to resolve disputes.
“When we get involved in this…childish antics, it doesn’t inspire me at all. Why would we get into this confusion for us to expect institutions like the Peace Council, and the Council of State to invite us into discussions? Why do we need to invite a third party?
“Indeed we need to grow a class of statesmen more than a class of partisan politicians and let the politicians also be warned that as much as we attack each other unnecessarily, we open ourselves to attacks from the public. How honourable have we become? We need to defend that title.”
