The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has issued a retraction and an apology over a statement he issued accusing Prof Ransford Gyampo, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, of disenfranchising students.

The NPP youth organiser accused Prof Gyampo of scheming with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to disenfranchise students.

He also accused the senior lecturer of having a reputation for sleeping with students.

In a statement issued on November 1, 2024, Mustapha said that he is apologising for the claims he made because he has no evidence to prove them.

“On Monday, 28th October 2024, I issued a press statement that alleged that Prof Gyampo was working with the NDC to disenfranchise students, using the UTAG strike action as a decoy. I also indicated that Prof Gyampo was doing so because of an assurance of political appointment in a future NDC government. Finally, I alleged that Prof Gyampo has an international reputation for sleeping with students and changing their grades.

“Lawyers of Prof Gyampo have subsequently engaged me and drawn my attention to the defamatory nature of the contents of my press release. Given that I have no evidence to back the allegations I made against Prof Gyampo, I hereby retract and render an unqualified apology to him,” he wrote.

He concluded, “I am causing this retraction and apology to be published and be given the same prominence by all the media outlets that carried the contents of my press statement.”
