As Ghana launches 5G services, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has encouraged users and regulators alike to remain vigilant against potential digital threats.
The vigilance against threats, he said, would ensure that technology contributes positively to Ghana’s development. Mr Akufo-Addo said this during the official launch of Ghana’s high-speed 5G internet service on Thursday, November 1, 2024, in Accra.
“The journey ahead requires vigilance and responsibility. 5G is a powerful catalyst for shaping Ghana’s future and, with its powers, comes with a responsibility to use it wisely.
“We must address concerns around data privacy, cyber security and responsible use to ensure that the 5G fosters unity and not division. The youth who make up the population stand to benefit immensely from this digital era,” he said.
For her part, the Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu highlighted government’s effort to ensure data protection of network users as the country launches its 5G network.
Ursula Owusu explained that government is concerned about data privacy of network users, hence the Ministry is working together with other agencies to implement security measures to avoid breach of data.
The Minister further noted that government is taking proactive measures by continuously monitoring network security.
“This includes end-to-end encryption and advanced cybersecurity measures to protect against potential breaches. Additionally, we are working with industry experts to continuously monitor network security, ensuring that any emerging threats are quickly addressed.
“We aim to build a trusted digital environment where Ghanaians can fully benefit from 5G while feeling secure about their data,” the Minister added.
Rural areas inclusion in 5G network
According to the Minister, cost of 5G network will be subsidized in rural areas to enable inclusion of persons in these communities.
Government also intends to adopt satellite initiatives to aid the rural communities connect to the 5G network.
“We are committed to ensuring that 5G benefits all Ghanaians, regardless of their location. As part of our rural inclusion strategy, we’ve developed an initiative to subsidise infrastructure costs in underserved areas. We are working with our partners to leverage satellite and wireless solutions, which are often more feasible for rural deployment.”
“Our Universal Service Fund, managed by GIFEC, is now largely dedicated to rural connectivity projects, reinforcing our commitment to digital equity. This approach will deliver fast, reliable 4G and 5G services to communities that have traditionally faced connectivity challenges,” the Minister said.
5G affordability
Government says collaboration with telecom services providers are ongoing to offer affordable data plans catering to various needs and budgets.
Additionally, the government is exploring public-private partnerships to reduce consumer costs.
Through these efforts, government aims to make 5G accessible to businesses, small enterprises, students, urban residents, and low-income households.
“Our goal is to create a digital ecosystem where high-speed connectivity is within the reach of everyone,” Ursula noted.
