Ga Mantse to lead Grand Hɔmɔwɔ UK Festival on October 26

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, will lead a historic delegation to London for the Grand Hɔmɔwɔ UK Festival 2024, marking a significant step toward uniting the GaDangme family both at home and abroad.

The event, scheduled for October 26, 2024, will bring the heart and soul of the Ga people to the UK in a vibrant celebration of heritage, traditions, and unity.

“The Grand Hɔmɔwɔ UK Festival is not just a cultural event—it is a movement, a powerful expression of who we are, and a chance to show the world the vibrancy of our people,” a press statement issued said.

For the first time in history, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II will personally attend the festival, carrying the weight of GaDangme’s rich cultural legacy.

His presence will imbue the event with the dignity, pride, and strength that define the Ga people.

However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who was initially scheduled to meet with the King, will undergo surgery around the time of the visit. In his place, the Emir of the UK is expected to receive King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

This year’s Hɔmɔwɔ Festival takes on a deeper significance as it aligns with the mission to “Help Alleviate Hunger Caused by Poverty.”

This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger, which aims to end hunger and malnutrition globally.

The festival is guided by values of Empowerment, Nourishment, and Development, reflecting a commitment to making Hɔmɔwɔ not only a symbol of celebration but also a call to action.

“Hɔmɔwɔ is our way of hooting at hunger, declaring that it has no place in our future. It reminds us of the strength and perseverance of our people, and it inspires us to move forward with confidence and purpose,” the statement read.

The term Hɔmɔwɔ itself, derived from two Ga words (Hɔmɔ meaning hunger and wɔ meaning to hoot at), symbolises triumph over adversity.

Celebrants will honour this legacy by feasting on traditional dishes such as kpokpoe (kpekple) and palm nut soup, as their forebears did.

The Grand Hɔmɔwɔ UK Festival will commence at 2 pm on October 26, 2024, at Borough Hall, Royal Hill, Greenwich, SE10 8RE.

The day will feature the rhythm of Ga drumming, traditional dances, authentic cuisine, and the warmth of the GaDangme community.

Leading up to the event are a series of key engagements, including a Ŋɔɔwala with the GaDangme community, a Thanksgiving Service with the Ga Fellowship and Christian Council UK, a Business Forum, and the launch of the Ga Mantse Foundation at the House of Lords, culminating in a reception at the House of Commons.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II will also be received by the Emir of the UK and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, exemplifying the event’s commitment to unity and solidarity.

The statement extended an invitation to the media and the global community, urging them to join in launching this extraordinary event.

“This festival will not just celebrate our past but will shine a light on the future we envision—a future without hunger,” it stated.
