In anticipation of the pivotal parliamentary session, the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has issued a call for the Speaker to comply unreservedly with the Supreme Court’s order to halt the execution of the ruling declaring four parliamentary seats vacant.
The CDD acknowledged the varying opinions circulating in public discourse regarding the legality of the Speaker’s actions and the subsequent intervention by the apex court.
This unfolding situation has presented a unique challenge to Ghana’s constitutional ethos, demanding careful navigation to mitigate potential constitutional and political turmoil, particularly against the backdrop of the approaching 2024 general elections.
In a statement released by the think tank, stakeholders across the political spectrum were urged to exercise maximum restraint, assume a sense of responsibility, and uphold the foundational tenets of Ghana’s democracy.
Emphasizing the importance of preserving peace and stability, the CDD underscored the need to avoid a reoccurrence of past contentious episodes within the parliamentary domain.
To de-escalate the current tensions and uphold the rule of law, CDD-Ghana advocated for the Speaker and Parliament to wholeheartedly adhere to the directives of the Supreme Court, even in the face of disagreements with the ruling.
The timely filing of requisite legal documents was stressed as crucial to ensuring a swift progression of the case, offering clarity and resolution to the complex legal and political impasse.
The recent Supreme Court ruling on Friday, October 18 mandated Parliament to allow the four affected MPs to continue serving until a final determination is reached.
This development stemmed from the Speaker’s earlier declaration on October 17 of four vacant seats, sparking a legal showdown centered on constitutional interpretations and party affiliations.
