Gabby hails Afenyo-Markin’s exceptional leadership

Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has commended Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for his exceptional leadership in handling a potentially volatile situation in Parliament.

This comes after the Minority caucus declared their intention to occupy the Majority side when Parliament reconvenes on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

Afenyo-Markin, in an interview on Peace FM, indicated that the Majority side would vacate the Chamber peacefully, avoiding any confrontation, if the Minority attempted to take their seats.

He emphasized that they would wait for the Speaker’s decision rather than engage in a brawl.

The parliamentary tension stems from Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four seats as vacant, a decision that was stayed by the Supreme Court.

Despite this, the Minority has vowed to adhere to the Speaker’s ruling, potentially shifting the balance of power in Parliament.

Gabby Otchere-Darko, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), lauded Afenyo-Markin’s leadership and maturity in navigating the standoff, which he described as a crucial moment for the country’s democracy.

“I am sure the majority of Ghanaians will join me in commending Alex Afenyo Markin, MP, and Majority Leader, for his strong show of leadership and maturity, patriotism and wisdom with his decision to avoid any needless potential brawlish exhibition of HONOURABLE members which has been set up by the notice from the opposition NDC to ignore the Supreme Court and make themselves the “majority.”

Gabby advised the various political parties to focus on convincing the undecided and unconvinced on measures put in place to create jobs, reduce the cost of living, and fix roads.

He said the theatrics don’t keep the factory plants on 24/7, kicking against brawl.

“He told Peace FM this morning that the NPP MPs have no interest in joining such a circus in Parliament tomorrow, fighting the NDC over chairs – who should occupy the Majority side of the House. The NPP will stay away from Parliament until the Speaker makes it clear that he will adhere to the Supreme Court directive until the final determination of the court on the fate of the MPs whose seats were declared by the Speaker as vacant.

“For Markin, the Minority are looking for a confrontation but “I won’t give them that theatre.” We have a few weeks to Dec 7, we don’t need such macho drama. Let the parties focus on convincing the undecided and unconvinced how they will create jobs, reduce the cost of living, fix our roads, secure our access to health and education, and make our economy more predictable for business decisions. The theatrics don’t keep factory plants on 24-7. Except perhaps, drinking bars.
