According to a post by Ghana Chronicles, it indicates that government has finally approved the implementation of a bill to be added onto the existing fees of tertiary students. Government says students in public tertiary institutions will now have to pay their own utility bills as one of the innovative and alternative means to tackle increasing utility debts in public universities. This new bill comprises of the cost of water, electricity, sanitation and other domestic services provided by the school which was formerly taken care of by government.
Meanwhile, during their campaign for their second term in 2020, the education minister at that time, NAPO promised that no students will pay utility bills. This is a strategic move by government to lessen financial burdens on parents and students who take care of themselves. Tertiary education in Ghana is one of the most expensive to acquire and this new addition is going to make the fees to skyrocket. Some concerned citizens have expressed their dissatisfaction with this sudden decision taken by the government, and this is what some of them had to say.
