Kudjoe Fianoo, chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), has voiced his concerns about the current state of Ghanaian football, claiming that the sport is in disarray.
He attributes the decline to a “family and friends” system within the Ghana Football Association (GFA), which he believes is more focused on personal gain than the betterment of the game.
Fianoo’s comments come in the wake of the Black Stars’ disappointing performance in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, recently suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sudan, leaving the team winless in their opening four matches and sitting fourth in their group with just two points.
Reflecting on the team’s struggles, Fianoo said, “It is now looking very unlikely for Ghana to qualify. The GFA is being run with friends and families who are only there for personal benefits, not to improve the game.”
He further expressed his frustration with the current leadership, stating, “Ghana football is in a complete mess. If the FA continues with this family and friends system, this is the result we will keep getting. These individuals at the GFA came solely to benefit themselves, not to advance our football.”
Fianoo called for an end to the culture of blind obedience, urging stakeholders to challenge the status quo. “Things can only change if we stop the ‘yes sir, master’ mentality and speak the truth to those in power,” he told Akoma FM in Kumasi-Ghana.
The Black Stars are set to regroup next month for their final 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Angola and Niger, in a last-ditch effort to salvage their campaign.
