Education Minister lauds student-led innovations at 2024 Stemnovation

The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has commended the cutting-edge technologies showcased at the 2024 STEMNNOVATION Competition.

According to him, these student-led STEM projects have the potential to significantly advance the government’s industrialization agenda.

“In a country like ours, we must ask: how can industrialization transform our nation? We often speak of it, but without innovators, how do we achieve it? This is why I believe in merging TVET and STEM. What we’ve seen today represents the take-off of our economy. I am confident the future is bright with these young innovators,” Dr. Adutwum noted.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Dr. Adutwum revealed the government’s plans to connect these talented students with companies that can provide grants to commercialize their innovations.

He stressed the importance of creating a system where businesses can fund the development of these ideas, with both students and schools benefiting from the commercialization.

Addressing concerns about securing patents, Dr. Adutwum assured that through the collaboration between students and grant-providing companies, these innovations would be protected during the commercialization process.

“With grant funding, these companies will handle the patenting and ensure the originality of the ideas. West Africa is a large market, and I firmly believe that with the right support, these young innovators can drive change in our world,” he added.

The third day of the 2024 STEMNNOVATION took place at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), with students from across the country presenting their STEM ideas.

The projects were presented into four categories: Environmental Sustainability, Digital Technology, Sustainable Energy, and Food Sovereignty.

A total of 56 schools participated, including Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, Obuasi Senior High School, Dabokpa Senior Technical School, and Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ Senior High School.
Obuasi Senior High School emerged as the overall winner, taking home a cash prize of 50,000 Ghana cedis, two laptops, and additional awards.

Dabokpa Senior Technical School secured second place, Yaa Asantewaa Girls placed third, and Presbyterian Boys Senior High School took fourth place.

All schools that ranked within the top 20 received cash prizes ranging from 50,000 to 10,000 Ghana cedis to further support the development of their innovative projects.
