Renowned Ghanaian clergyman Archbishop Duncan Williams has become embroiled in controversy following his prayer for opposition leader John Mahama.

Williams disclosed during a recent church service that he had received criticism from President Nana Akufo-Addo and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) after meeting with other clerics to pray for Mahama.

Williams justified his behavior by saying that he is unbiased and loves Ghana, not favoring any political party. He highlighted that it is acceptable to pray for the opposition leader, mentioning his previous prayers for Akufo-Addo during his 2016 opposition campaign.

“When you face opposition, didn’t I pray for you? So, what’s wrong with offering prayers to political rivals? Are they not also people from Ghana? Bishop Duncan Williams interrogates Akuffo Addo.

A contentious discussion concerning religion’s place in politics has been sparked by the Archbishop’s remarks. While supporters regard Williams’ prayers as a symbol of togetherness and the good of the country, critics claim that his activities weaken the authority of the ruling party.

One thing is certain as the discussion rages on: Ghana’s political climate has been rocked by Archbishop Duncan Williams’ audacity in offering prayers for the head of the opposition. How this will affect the future of the nation is a matter best left to time.
