Akua Donkor, the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has vowed to take legal action against former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), demanding a whopping 2 trillion cedis (GHC 2million) in damages.
This comes after former President John Mahama questioned the eligibility of certain presidential candidates, including Akua Donkor, to appear on the ballot paper.
John Mahama’s remarks, made during a recent campaign tour, sparked outrage from Akua Donkor, who feels he has no right to question her place on the ballot.
“If Mahama claims to be an ex-president, I will take him to court. I will sue him for 2 trillion cedis. Why would he say I do not merit to appear on the ballot?” Akua Donkor declared at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra.
This is not the first time Akua Donkor has threatened to sue Mahama.
In 2020, she vowed to take him to court over a house he allegedly gifted her, only to take it back.
Akua Donkor has also accused Mahama of destroying her records and being behind her disqualification by Charlotte Osei, the former Electoral Commission chair.
Meanwhile, former President John Mahama’s comments that sparked the controversy centered around the Electoral Commission’s decision to disqualify some candidates, including Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention (PNC), while allowing others to remain on the ballot.
“The PNC is more worthy than several parties that I see on the ballot paper. That is the issue we have with this Electoral Commission; sometimes, they are discriminatory,” John Mahama said.
However, Akua Donkor has emphasized that she intends to serve the Electoral Commission with a writ after the process and maintains that, as a Ghanaian citizen, she deserves to be on the ballot just like any other presidential candidate.
“I take strong offense at what he said,” she added.
