Galamsey: Akufo-Addo’s govt has failed, Parliament must act

Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has raised alarm over the severe challenges facing the country as a result of widespread illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He emphasised that the environmental and economic devastation caused by galamsey is crippling communities across the nation.

Dr Forson attributed the crisis to leadership failures, accusing the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia-led NPP government of lacking the political will to address the issue.

He also pointed to official complicity, suggesting that key figures within the government have allowed illegal mining activities to continue unchecked, further exacerbating the problem.

The Minority Leader called for urgent action to combat the galamsey menace, stressing that without strong leadership and accountability, the country’s natural resources and future generations remain at risk.

“Mr. Speaker, we are at a crisis point. At the heart of this crisis is leadership failure, official complicity, and lack of political will by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government,” Dr. Forson stated emphatically when he addressed parliament in Accra on Tuesday.

He urged Parliament to take immediate action, emphasising that inaction is no longer an option.

“Rt. Hon Speaker, to do nothing is no longer an option. This House must rise to the occasion and bring the necessary pressure to bear on the government to act,” he declared.
