Andy Appiah-Kubi Shares Regret Over Passage Of LI 2462, “We Have Failed As Members Of Parliament”

According to a report by PeaceFmOnline, Andy Appiah-Kubi, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, has voiced his deep regret over the passage of Legislative Instrument 2462 (LI 2462), which permits prospecting in Ghana’s forest reserves.

Speaking on TV3 during a panel discussion, Appiah-Kubi declared, “We have failed as Members of Parliament for passing LI 2462.”

The environmental destruction caused by mining activities has been particularly evident in Ghana’s forest reserves, including the Draw River, Neung South, Boin Tano, and Oda River Forest Reserves.

These reserves, once thriving ecosystems, have been scarred by deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution.

Illegal mining, which often involves the use of toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide, has had devastating effects on Ghana’s rivers and water bodies.

Communities that once relied on these water sources for drinking, farming, and fishing now face health risks from consuming contaminated water.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have voiced their concerns over the health crisis that is unfolding as a result of the pollution caused by mining activities.
