GSA decries landguard attacks on staff lands in Katamanso

The Ghana Standards Authority has raised concerns over landguard attacks on its lands in Katamanso, Greater Accra, which were secured to provide staff accommodation.

The Standards Authority bemoans that for the past decade, efforts to develop the sites have been disrupted by violent attacks, including gunfire from landguards.

George William Asamah of the Authority’s Internal Audit Unit expressed this concern during a visit to the sites by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council and called for urgent intervention.

“It’s been difficult acquiring and possessing the land. There have been issues from land guards to re-acquisition, here and there, and there have been shots fired a couple of times.

“So it makes it difficult for our people to possess the land. As hard as the economy is, people want decent and peaceful places to lay their heads.

“And once somebody makes huge investments and he’s nearing pension, and he can’t possess it, that becomes a bother and worry to the person. Because if I go on pension, do I have to relocate to my village? People have their foundations destroyed, and their foundations built on, it’s a disturbing situation.

“This is staff welfare. You know the cost of land, the plot of land is GHC60,000, look at the prices of cement, so if somebody buys 100 bags of cement and you build something. But later you receive a call that your wall, the foundation is being pulled, how will you feel, especially if you took a loan? How much is our salary.”
