Four NPP MPs Face Seat Loss as Haruna Iddrisu Calls for Compliance with Article 97

Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has initiated steps to activate Article 97 (1)(g) of the Ghanaian Constitution, aiming to compel four Members of Parliament (MPs) from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to vacate their seats.

According to Modern Ghana on Monday, October 14, 2024, This move comes in the wake of the announcement by these MPs, including former Minister of State Cynthia Morrison, that they will contest the upcoming elections as independent candidates.

Article 97 (1)(g) mandates that an MP must resign from their position if they switch parties after their election or choose to continue serving as an independent member.

Iddrisu’s declaration signals a pivotal change in the political landscape, potentially affecting the NPP’s representation in Parliament.

Iddrisu emphasized the importance of party loyalty

The announcement has sparked significant debate within political circles, particularly as it challenges the established norms of the NPP.

Cynthia Morrison, the MP for Agona West, and two other party members are at the forefront of this move, potentially setting a precedent that could influence future political dynamics.

Should the Minority successfully invoke this constitutional provision, the NPP could face a huge reduction in their parliamentary representation, leading to by-elections in the affected constituencies.

Such a scenario would not only test the party’s stability but also alter the current balance of power in Parliament.
