The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has announced that it will commence its intended online voters register re-exhibition exercise on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
In a press statement copied to GhanaWeb, the commission indicated that the online re-exhibition would last for five days, ending on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
It added that the public can check details on the Provisional Voters Register for the 2024 general election using the short code *711*51# or on its website – https://ec.gov.gh – free of charge.
“The Electoral Commission wishes to announce for the information of the General Public, Registered Voters and all Stakeholders, that Re-Exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register (PVR) will commence on Tuesday, 15th October and end on Saturday, 19th October, 2024.
“The public may recall that during the Special IPAC meeting held on 1st October, the Commission assured the Public that the revised PVR will be re-exhibited Online for registered voters to check their details and report any discrepancies to the Commission for correction. From Tuesday, 15th October, voters can check their details via short code *711*51# free of charge,” part of the statement read.
It added, “Voters can also check their details from our website: https://ec.gov.gh. Voters should click on the pop-up link at the bottom-right corner of the screen and enter the 10-digit Voter ID number to receive their voter registration details.”
The EC further stated that voters should report all the issues they find in the register to its district offices where they registered for the appropriate measures to be taken.
It added that all anomalies with voters’ details in the register should be reported during the period set for the re-exhibition exercise.
“The Public should note that any discrepancies identified must be reported to the District Office of the Commission where they are registered voters for correction. Once the Re-Exhibition Exercise ends on Saturday, 19th October, voters will still be able to check their details Online but CANNOT request for correction of their details,” it added.
It also said that political parties should use the template given to them to submit discrepancies they find in the register.
Background:
The EC, in a letter in response to the petition submitted to the EC by the NDC at the end of the party’s demonstration on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, announced that it will re-exhibit the corrected Provisional Voters Register (PVR) online before the final register is printed for the 2024 elections.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) made the following demand in its petition to the EC:
“Re-exhibit the Register after the Forensic Audit: The NDC further demands a 5-day re-exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register after the forensic audit is completed. This will enable registered voters, including those affected by the errors, to verify their details and confirm the integrity of the Voters Register. Without such a re-exhibition, many legitimate voters will be disenfranchised.”
Responding to the demand by the NDC for re-exhibition of the PVR, the EC indicated that a voter register would be exhibited but would be done electronically.
The commission explained that it is opting for an online exhibition of the register because of the nearness of the December 7, 2024, general election.
It added that the online exhibition of the register would come at no cost to voters.
“Whilst the Commission is not opposed to undertaking another physical exhibition of the corrected PVR in the entire 40,000 plus exhibition centres, given the amount of time it takes to print and distribute the PVR (some four weeks), it will not be feasible to achieve this due to the limited time to the general election.
“The Commission intends to implement an online exhibition of the PVR at no cost to registered voters. Voters will be able to report on anomalies with their details within a time frame to be made available to the public. The Voters Register will be displayed online until Election Day,” part of the letter reads.
