President Nana Akufo-Addo has praised the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, for his 25-year commitment to protecting the environment. Since ascending to the Ofori Panin Stool, the Okyenhene has led campaigns against deforestation, irresponsible mining, water pollution, and activities contributing to global warming.
“Today, the advocacy you started 25 years ago has become an issue of serious concern to all. Many groups and institutions have seen the need to join the campaign against irresponsible mining and the need to protect the environment. You have done well. You have promoted peace and development in Okyeman. The world has seen your dedication and humility towards mankind,” President Akufo-Addo stated.
The President made these remarks during a grand durbar marking the Okyenhene’s 25th anniversary. The event, held in Kyebi, was the highlight of several durbars organized in his honor across his kingdom.
During his speech, President Akufo-Addo urged the Okyenhene to remain focused despite personal attacks. “As for the insults, don’t worry, just be focused. If you complain of insults, then what about me?” he added with a smile.
In his response, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin thanked his supporters and criticized Ghana’s centralized governance system. He called for decentralization, allowing local assemblies to raise their own resources and have more control. “Kwame Nkrumah initiated the concept of centralizing our resources and governance system. We send all our resources to the national coffers and governance is controlled at the top. This system hasn’t helped us, and we need to change,” he said.
The durbar was attended by chiefs from across the country and featured a colorful display of culture.
