We’ll Vote Against You, Don’t Come And Campaign In Our Area- Illegal Miner Threatens Task Force

The anti-galamsey task force has been on the ground making sure they prevent illegal miners from mining in water bodies across the country.

The force was constituted after Organized Labour, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the clergy mounted pressure on the government to deal ruthlessly with the menace which has caused enormous devastation to our water bodies and forest reserves.

While the task force was still grappling with how to go about their duties to attain their mandate, an illegal miner threatened to vote against the current administration for waging a war against galamsey.

In a video shared on the Facebook of Accra-based United Television, the illegal miner whose excavator was being destroyed by the task force said he would punish the government on December 7.

He dared that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) should not come and campaign in the area.

President Nana Akufo Addo promised to put his presidency on the line to eradicate galamsey. He implemented strict measures to curb the menace in his first term.

Nonetheless, the NPP lost most of its seats in the 2020 general elections, many of which were attributed to the intense fight against galamsey.

Nana Addo took his leg off the accelerator in his second term, empowering more people to go into galamsey. If what the galamseyer in the viral video is anything to go by, then it will take a lot of political will to defeat illegal mining.

With about three months to end his tenure as the fifth President of the Fourth Republic, it remains to be seen if Nana Akufo Addo achieves his goal of ending galamsey.
