Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Agona West, has been barred by a District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru from running as an independent parliamentary candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections.

According to a report by 3News on Saturday, October 12, 2024, a court has blocked Cynthia Morrison from proceeding with her nomination as a Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency, effectively halting her campaign efforts.

Emmanuel Addison, Solomon Nyarko, and Harrison K. Aglago have taken Cynthia Morrison, the independent parliamentary candidate, and the Electoral Commission of Agona Swedru to court.

Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, the lawyer representing the plaintiffs, effectively made the case for a court-ordered injunction to halt Cynthia Morrison’s activities until the legal issue is fully addressed and resolved by the court.

“The motion for interlocutory injunction restraining the 1st defendant from holding herself as a parliamentary candidate and the 2nd defendant from proceeding with the nomination of Cynthia Mamle Morrison as an Independent Parliamentary nominee until the matter is fully determined,” the court said.

Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, had a strong run with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), winning the Agona West parliamentary seat in both 2016 and 2020.

However, her journey took a different turn in 2024 when she lost the NPP primary, prompting her decision to run as an independent candidate.

This pivot marks a significant shift in her political path, showcasing her determination to continue serving the people of Agona West.

Cynthia Morrison opted to run as an independent candidate, citing unfair favoritism and a lack of transparency in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate selection process, which prompted her decision to break away from the party’s ticket.

Cynthia Morrison received 152 votes in the April 2024 primary, but ultimately lost the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) nomination to Christopher Arthur, who secured 240 votes.

This outcome led Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Agona West and former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, to announce her intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
