Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has made a compelling call to Ghanaians to vote against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming general elections on December 7. Speaking during a rally in the Savannah Region as part of his nationwide campaign tour, Mahama criticized the NPP government, under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for what he described as the mismanagement of Ghana’s economy, resulting in widespread hardship across the country.
Mahama, known for his direct approach, accused the ruling party of economic incompetence and failing to take responsibility for the current financial struggles faced by many Ghanaians. He claimed that the NPP has consistently shifted blame rather than acknowledging the negative impact of their policies on the country’s economy.
During his address, Mahama highlighted key areas where the economy has suffered under NPP’s watch, including the rapid depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and the steep rise in the cost of essential goods such as cement. He contrasted the current economic situation with the state of the economy when the NPP first took power, accusing them of driving the country into deeper financial distress. According to him, the NPP has increased the value of the dollar from GH¢4 to GH¢17 and skyrocketed the price of cement from GH¢24 per bag to GH¢110 per bag, while continuing to tout themselves as better economic managers.
The former president further condemned the NPP for what he perceives as a lack of accountability, urging Ghanaians to vote for the NDC to bring about meaningful change and economic relief. Mahama assured the crowd that under his leadership, the NDC would take decisive steps to restore economic stability and improve the quality of life for Ghanaians, especially the youth and the unemployed.
