Ghana’s AFCON Hopes Dented by Sudan Draw in Accra

Ghana faced further challenges to qualifying for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they were held to a goalless draw by Sudan in Accra. This left them in third place in Group F, trailing Angola by four points and Sudan by two.

Ghana’s performance has declined since their 2017 Cup of Nations semi-final appearance, with exits from the subsequent tournaments.

Despite having a squad with players from the top five European leagues and a significantly higher world ranking than Sudan, Ghana faces the humiliating prospect of not qualifying for the finals for the first time in 21 years.

Angola now has the chance to extend their lead as they host Niger in Luanda, with a potential victory placing them seven points ahead of Ghana.

The top two teams in the group will secure spots in the finals in Morocco. If Sudan defeats Ghana in Benghazi, the Black Stars will face almost certain elimination.

Sudan, led by Ghana-born Kwesi Appiah, is facing scrutiny due to a potential conflict of interest as he also holds a position in the Ghana Football Association executive committee.
