Election 2024: EC’s plan to commence printing of ballot papers was rejected

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it doubts the Electoral Commission (EC) can commence printing the notice of poll and ballot papers today.

This follows the failure of the EC to provide details of the voter register for the political parties to aid them in appropriately monitoring the printing process.

EC announced its intention to commence printing in a communiqué issued on Wednesday, October 9, but was strongly opposed by some political parties, necessitating a meeting on Thursday, October 10.

After a meeting with the EC on the printing, the Deputy Director of IT and Elections for the NDC, Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, indicated that the printing of the notice of poll and the ballot papers cannot commence unless the information on the total number of ballots to be printed and the ratio to be printed per printing house is provided.

“With the buy-in of all the parties at the meeting, I doubt whether the EC can proceed with the printing. Because all the parties agreed that, look, there is a need for us to peruse the notice of poll, and bring it onto the table. You cannot ask our party agents to authenticate that on our behalf. Leadership must do that.

“Don’t say that we are going to give the statistics at the printing house or our agents should go and do the authentication at the printing house.

“No, we want it to be on a round table. Leadership will come and do all this. So with this unison agreement from political parties, there was no disagreement at all.”
