Ghana is grappling with the devastating effects of illegal mining activities commonly called galamsey. Galamsey is threatening not only the country’s natural resources but also the livelihood and health of Ghanaians.
To add their voices to the clarion call for the government to tackle the situation head-on, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the Catholic Church have embarked on a nationwide protest against illegal mining.
The demonstration seeks to pressure the government, civil society, and stakeholders to take decisive action to protect Ghana’s lands, water bodies, and farmlands from further devastation.
Mr Bernard Mornah, the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC) joined the demonstration to show his support and solidarity. Speaking to the media during the peaceful protest, Mr Bernard Mornah commended the Catholic Church for showing leadership, at a time when Labour has been so disorganized.
He slammed Organized Labour for disappointing the whole country by unexpectedly suspending their planned nationwide strike against galamsey.
To the PNC flagbearer, the government would have been compelled to deal ruthlessly with the menace if Labour had embarked on the strike.
He further mentioned that the Catholic Bishops Conference’s decision to start the peaceful protest with prayers was a step in the right direction.
Meanwhile, the government has already begun rolling out plans to deal with the situation. Soldiers have been deployed to mining communities to prevent people from mining in water bodies. According to the government, processes will also be triggered to repeal the Legislative Instrument which allows mining activities in water bodies.
