Come To The Negotiations Table- Gov’t Finally Begs Labour As Nationwide Strike Looms

Organized Labour is unrelenting as it has vowed to embark on its planned nationwide strike starting tomorrow, Thursday, October 10.

The impending strike is aimed at putting pressure on the government to find concrete measures to deal with galamsey activities.

The nationwide strike became the last resort for Labour after all efforts to compel the government to declare a state of emergency proved unsuccessful.

A nationwide strike will spell doom for the economy of the country which is already struggling. In the face of the looming danger, the government has pleaded with Organized Labour to reconsider its decision.

The leaders of Organized Labour initially had a crucial meeting with President Nana Akufo Addo to find an amicable solution to deal with the matter, but the meeting ended inconclusive as both parties could not reach a compromise.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on October 8, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, Government spokesperson on governance and security, urged for more dialogue between the government and Organized Labour, rather than moving forward with a strike that could effectively shut down the nation.

He revealed that the government is meeting the leadership of Organized Labour behind the scenes so they could be comprised from both sides.

“There’s a lot of backdoor conversation with Organised Labour to meet them halfway,” he revealed during the interview.

Illegal mining activities have been topical in the political landscape as they threaten the survival of our water bodies and forest reserves.

It remains to be seen if the government will succumb to pressure and declare a state of emergency or not.
