Fifty-two (52) Democracy Hub protesters have so far been granted bail, following their arrest during a demonstration between September 21 to September 23.
On Tuesday, October 8, the Accra Circuit Court granted bail to 31 protesters after 21 others had earlier been granted bail by the High Court.
However, the lead convener of the group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, was once again been denied bail.
The 31 protesters granted bail by the Circuit Court were each released on a bail bond of GHS 20,000, with one surety.
The 21 others were granted bail on Monday after their lawyers successfully appealed the Circuit Court’s decision to remand them at the High Court.
This brings the total number of protesters granted bail to 52, out of the 53 arrested. Despite the release of the majority, Oliver Barker-Vormawor remains in custody.
Before Tuesday’s Circuit Court proceedings, the defence team had sought to secure their clients’ release at the High Court.
However, opposition from the Attorney General’s office led to the case being adjourned to Wednesday. Nevertheless, lawyers for the protesters repeated the bail application at the Circuit Court, where it was granted.
Among those released are Raphael Williams and Fanny Otoo, the latter of whom had reportedly been in and out of the hospital since his arrest.
The case has been adjourned to October 22 for a case management conference.
