“‘These Acts Can Breach the Peace’—National Peace Council Calls for Vigilance Against Vandalism

The National Peace Council (NPC) has urged the Ghana Police Service to take swift action against the rising incidents of vandalism targeting political party materials in light of the upcoming 2024 general elections.

According to Modern Ghana on Monday, October 7, 2024, In a statement released on October 6, the NPC highlighted the potential threats to national stability posed by these acts of defacement.

The NPC’s statement, disseminated through the National Election Response Group (NERG), expressed alarm over the increasing destruction of campaign posters, billboards, and other promotional items by rival political factions.

Formed in May 2024, the NERG comprises the NPC, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and various stakeholders, all committed to monitoring and preventing electoral violence.

“NERG has observed with concern the trend of destruction of posters, billboards, and other publicity materials of political parties by their political opponents,” the NPC statement read. “These acts can breach the peace we are enjoying as a country if not curtailed.”

In an effort to foster a peaceful electoral environment, the NPC called on the public to refrain from engaging in vandalism. They urged political parties to conduct their campaigns in a manner that does not incite conflict or hostility.

To address the situation effectively, the NPC emphasized the importance of vigilance from the police.

“NERG is therefore encouraging the public not to undertake or participate in such acts and uses this medium to call on the Ghana Police Service to monitor and respond to such acts to preserve the peace we are enjoying,” the statement continued.
