The Title of ‘Prophet’ Has Lost Its Value, Says Pastor Mensa Otabil Amid Controversial Prophecies

Dr. Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of ICGC, has expressed concern over the conduct of some pastors in Ghana, stating that their actions are damaging the clergy’s reputation.

He highlighted the public’s growing distrust in church leaders due to irresponsible behavior and controversial statements. Pastor Otabil also pointed out the lack of regulation in the religious sector, allowing individuals to assume titles like “prophet” and “bishop” without proper scrutiny.

“People see the power that comes with being part of a charismatic church, but what I see is a looming danger. The public’s trust in us is crumbling,” he said. He further noted, “These days, when someone claims to be a prophet, it’s almost synonymous with being a fraudster. We have taken sacred roles, once held by figures like Isaiah and Jeremiah, and turned them into something cheap.”

His comments follow a wave of controversial prophecies, including Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah’s prediction that former President John Dramani Mahama will win the 2024 elections, which has sparked debate.
