President Nana Akufo-Addo has responded to comments made by former President John Dramani Mahama, who recently poked fun at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Breaking the 8” campaign. Mahama, who secured the 8th position on the ballot for the upcoming 2024 presidential election, joked that the NPP’s goal of breaking their two-term limit would be impossible since he now holds the symbolic number 8.
During a visit to the Upper East Region, President Akufo-Addo addressed the situation, suggesting that holding the 8th position might actually work against Mahama. He expressed skepticism about Mahama’s remarks, implying that the number 8 may not be as advantageous as Mahama assumes.
President Akufo-Addo also used the occasion to commend Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, praising his loyalty and consistent support over the nearly 20 years they have worked together. He urged the people of the Upper East Region to rally behind Bawumia in the upcoming election, expressing his belief that Bawumia is the right candidate to lead the NPP to victory and successfully “Break the 8.”
The President’s remarks reflect the ongoing political rivalry between the NPP and Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the parties prepare for a competitive race in the 2024 general election. Both sides are trying to capture the support of key regions, with Upper East being one of the battlegrounds. The NPP’s focus remains on maintaining its momentum as it aims for an unprecedented third term in office, while the NDC seeks to reclaim power, with Mahama once again as its presidential candidate.
