Akufo-Addo Free Protesters From Custody For They’re Not Enemies Of State

Osaberima Tsibu Kwaw Darko, the Paramount Chief of the Enyan Denkyira Traditional Area, has publicly called on President Nana Addo to release the #StopGalamseyNow demonstrators from custody.

In his statement, Osaberima emphasized that these protesters are not enemies of the state but rather citizens acting in the interest of the nation by raising awareness about the dangers of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The protests, which have been taking place across Accra, have drawn attention to the devastating environmental impact of galamsey.

Illegal mining has polluted rivers, destroyed farmlands, and disrupted the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.

Protesters argue that the government has not done enough to address the crisis, and they demand immediate, decisive action to stop the destruction of the environment. Their aim is to protect the country’s natural resources for future generations.

During the protests, several demonstrators were arrested, sparking public outcry and calls for their release. The demonstrators’ plight has gained significant support online, with social media movements such as #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow gaining momentum.

These hashtags have united activists, environmentalists, and concerned citizens who believe the fight against illegal mining is essential for Ghana’s future.

In addition to Osaberima Tsibu Kwaw Darko’s call, other notable figures have expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the protesters are exercising their democratic right to peaceful assembly.

The chief’s statement reflects the growing concern among Ghanaians regarding illegal mining’s effects on the environment, and the belief that those raising these concerns should be treated as allies, not adversaries.

JoyNews and StarrFM have also reported extensively on the protests and the environmental damage caused by galamsey.

Many Ghanaians, including community leaders and activists, believe that now is the time for the government to take more substantial steps in addressing the issue.

The chief’s call for President Nana Addo to release the protesters underscores the importance of protecting freedom of expression while also recognizing the urgency of addressing illegal mining.
