Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on those campaigning on religious and tribal grounds to stop such an approach.

He emphasized that playing the religious or tribal card as a strategy to be elected to the high office of the President has never been a consideration for the Ghanaian voter in deciding who to vote for.

His call comes on the back of recent pronouncements by some political actors in the country seeking to make religion a centerpiece in this year’s campaign season.

Some have even gone to the extent of suggesting that a Christian should be voted for as Ghana’s next President because the majority of Ghanaians are Christians.

Speaking at a community engagement in Ahenkro in the Afigya Kwabre North Constituency on Friday, 4th October, Dr. Prempeh described this as unfortunate.

He noted that the people of Ghana have historically elected leaders only on the basis of their competence, track record, and vision.

“Since independence, Ghanaians have demonstrated that they do not discriminate when it comes to the choice of leaders. Religious and tribal affiliations have never been a consideration for electing Presidents in Ghana. Being a Christian or Muslim, a Mamprusi, Gonja, or Asante really and truly does not matter,” he said.

NAPO, as he is popularly known, was confident that Ghanaians will vote massively for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP presidential candidate, because Dr. Bawumia is competent and a visionary.

He added that Dr. Bawumia, as Vice President, has proven his track record by successfully spearheading many laudable social interventions.

“I am convinced that the good people of Ghana will vote massively for Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be the next President of Ghana because he is competent and has a proven track record and integrity. He is the most visible Vice President in the history of Ghana and has successfully spearheaded many laudable interventions even as Vice President.”

The Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Collins Adomako Mensah, who is re-contesting his seat, also recounted the achievements of the New Patriotic Party in the areas of energy, education, health, and infrastructure development in Afigya Kwabre North and across the country.

This, he said, justifies the need for Ghanaians to vote for Dr. Bawumia and all the party’s parliamentary candidates.

Hon. Collins Adomako Mensah further eulogized NAPO for his outstanding leadership and hard work, describing him as an excellent political godfather to him and many others.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh also commissioned a newly constructed ultramodern sports complex at Ahenkro, funded by the Ghana National Gas Company Ltd and supported by Nana Ahenkrosei Poku IV, the Chief of Ahenkro.

After the commissioning, an inaugural football match was played between the Old Stars team led by Captain Stephen Appiah and the Afigya Kwabre North 11, with the former defeating the latter by 3 goals to 1.
