Bismark Owusu in police grips
The Weija circuit court has remanded a 21-year-old unemployed young man, Bismark Owusu into police custody for two weeks for stealing and damaging electricity meters belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), valued at GH₵10,000.
Court documents indicate that the accused was being beaten by a mob at Choice near Weija Police Barrier in Accra, when a complainant in the matter rescued him from his attackers and sent him to the New Weija Police Station, thereby saving him from being lynched.
There have been several reports of thieves cutting off and stealing electricity meters fixed on electricity poles, in the night, in the area.
The accused who is a ‘shadow boy’ to vehicles loading from Mallam junction to Kasoa, during interrogation, told police officers that he had been asked by a man to collect the three (3) meters wrapped in a polythene bag, from behind a kiosk for him.
The prosecution led by Inspector Joseph Barabu told the court that the accused had told police officers that he and one other person after picking the three meters were waiting for a motorbike to go back to Mallam junction when they were accosted by some community members on suspicion of stealing the meters.
Bismark Owusu told officers that his accomplice managed to escape but he was arrested and beaten.
He has not been able to lead police to arrest his accomplice
.Bismark Owusu has pleaded not guilty to two counts of causing unlawful damage and stealing, and the court presided over by His Honour Joshua Caleb Ababio remanded him to reappear on October 10, 2024.
