Brussels, Oct. 2, (dpa/GNA) – The European Commission on Wednesday requested social media platforms YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok to provide information on how they recommend content to users.
Under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), platforms have to mitigate risks linked to their recommender systems, including mental health risks and the dissemination of harmful content.
YouTube and Snapchat are to provide details on their algorithm and its role in amplifying risks linked to the electoral process and civic discourse, mental health and the protection of minors, a press release said.
TikTok is questioned over “measures it adopted to avoid the manipulation of the service by malicious actors and to mitigate risks related to elections, pluralism of media, and civic discourse,” the commission said.
The three social media giants have until November 15 to respond to the request. The commission can impose fines if companies do not comply with such inquiries.
