Sports journalist Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Countryman Songo, has chided political figures who are accusing former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan of missing the 2010 World Cup penalty due to his affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to him, such accusations are baseless and unnecessary because no professional player would risk his record for political interest, as claimed by some people.
The host of ‘Fire for Fire’ on Adom TV lambasted politicians and individuals falsely accusing Gyan of missing the 2010 World Cup penalty and urged them to be decorous in expressing their opinions about footballers.
“Look at all this. Gyan, who would score such a goal to make history and establish himself globally as the first player to lead Ghana to the World Cup semi-finals, would intentionally miss it for politics’ sake? You see their mindset?
“If you say this to any right-thinking person, what do you expect them to do? How can you tell me a professional player would miss a penalty for an interest? This is stinking politics. Is that how the whites behave? You can express an opinion, but it should not be too dirty to score political points,” he said in Twi.
It will be recalled that Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, issued an apology to legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan over some claims he (Dafeamekpor) made regarding the penalty miss against Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa.
Dafeamekpor alleged in a Radio XYZ interview that Asamoah Gyan deliberately miscued the penalty because he did not want the NDC government to chalk up the achievement of being the government under whom Ghana made history as the first African nation to qualify for the semi-final of the World Cup.
This comment earned him severe backlash on social media, with some Ghanaians describing it as ‘bizarre, stupid, and ridiculous’.
