CAF approves Accra Sports Stadium to host Ghana-Sudan game

The Confederation of African Football has approved the Accra Sports Stadium to host Ghana’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.

According to Ghana Football Association Executive Council member, Dr Randy Abbey, CAF has given Ghana conditional approval after some key areas of the facility have been improved.

Dr Randy Abbey emphasised that the approval is for only the Sudan game and thus a reinspection will take place after the match to assess the stadium for the next home game.

“I have been told that CAF has finally given us conditional approval for the Sudan game. But they will come for reinspection after the match to decide whether the venue is fit to host the next home game in November. So we have a conditional approval for the game,” he told Original FM.

CAF officials had a three-day inspection at the venue from Friday, September 27 to Sunday, September 29, 2024.

The Accra Sports Stadium is gradually regaining shape to qualify to host a CAF Category 3 match following the National Sports Authority (NSA)’s robust renovations at the venue.

GhanaWeb discovered during a visit to the facility that the pitch has recovered its lush green as works are ongoing to get the grass level to the required length before the game after fixing other aspects including the Scoreboard, floodlights and washrooms.

The NSA’s swift efforts follow CAF’s rejection of all national venues in the country, with the Black Stars at risk of playing their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations home game against Sudan at a neutral venue.

However, following the conditional approval Black Stars will now host Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium October 11, 2024, on matchday three of the 2025 AFCON.
