The government has renewed its commitment to collaborate with industry players within the mining space to combat the impact of illegal mining on the environment and the economy at large.
According to the government, the establishment of the inter-ministerial committee by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a move to ensure that sustainable practices are implemented to secure the sector.
Speaking at the West Africa Mining Security Conference organised by the Australian High Commission in Ghana, the Director of Intelligence Analysis at the Ministry of National Security Dr Victoria Sam assured of efforts to safeguard the mining industry’s future.
“One of Ghana’s critical challenges is illegal mining, or galamsey and it poses a severe threat to the sustainability of our natural resources and the livelihood of our citizens. In response, the National Security Minister is chairing a five-member committee which is diligently working with local communities, traditional authorities, and industry experts to mitigate the havoc caused on our environment.”
The call for a ban on all forms of mining has gained wide media coverage in the past weeks, with Organised Labour and other organisations threatening to take action if the government fails to declare a state of emergency against the menace.
Organised Labour is set to meet later today, October 1, to decide its next course of action after the government defaulted on a September ending ultimatum.
