Some aggrieved traders at the Kumasi City Market popularly known as the Kejetia market have defected from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and have thrown their support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to them, despite supporting the NPP for years, they have benefited very little from the party.
The traders who are all women, appealed to the flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, seeking acceptance into the party and offering their support in the December Polls.
Speaking at the NDC women’s manifesto launch in the Ashanti region, Nana Pokua, the Market Queen at Kejetia Market noted that their decision to join the party stems from the fact that the NDC upholds the interest of women.
She emphasised that their decision to switch parties is rooted in the NDC’s recognition of women’s interests.
Nana Pokua stated, “We extend a warm welcome to former President John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Opoku Agyemang, and all NDC supporters present. On behalf of the traders in the Kumasi Market, we sincerely apologise. Despite the development projects you initiated for us, we chose to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP).”
“Trading is the primary occupation in the Ashanti Region, yet the NPP has not catered to the needs of traders here. We regret our past decisions and wish to commend you [Mahama] for selecting Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang.”
She further added, “We backed the NPP, but we feel neglected and betrayed. The market infrastructure you [Mahama] constructed for traders has been taken over by others, leaving us outside to conduct our trade. Once again, we apologise and declare our support for the NDC. We trust in your dedication to supporting women, and we look forward to the continued good work of Hon. Kwadwo Bonsu.”
