Tuah-Yeboah slams Democracy Hub protesters for acts of vandalism

Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, has defended the prosecution of 53 individuals arrested for allegedly violating Ghana’s Public Order Act during a demonstration last weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, the police arrested 53 members of Democracy Hub, who were protesting against the government’s alleged mismanagement and inaction regarding illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The police accused the protesters of breaching the law, and they have since been remanded in custody pending trial.

Tuah-Yeboah emphasized that violations of the law carry consequences.

“But if you are demonstrating, and in the course of that demonstration, you decide to take the laws into your own hands, it means that you want to maybe, resolve an illegality with another illegality.

“You want galamsey to be addressed. Then, by the same token, you also go against the laws of the land. And so as a government, we concede that galamsey is a fight we all need to wage. But in the course of waging that fight, you must also not break the laws of the land.”
