The Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Power Generators, Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, has called on the government to safeguard the revenue of the Electricity Company of Ghana in the event of the company’s leadership transition.
Samuel Dubik Mahama resigned as Managing Director of ECG on September 25, 2024, citing personal reasons.
The IPPG CEO in a statement said: “the resignation of the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has raised concerns about the growing attempts by political operatives to exploit the leadership vacuum to interfere with and loot ECG’s revenue.”
According to him, the stakeholders are keenly aware of the questionable interests and political interference that have pressured and plagued the company’s operations in the past.
“This moment of transition must not be another opportunity for such actors to undermine the company’s financial stress.
“I, therefore, call upon the Honourable Minister of Energy and the Board of Directors of ECG to take swift and robust action to secure and protect ECG’s revenue streams,” he said.
In the statement released on September 27, 2024, he noted that it is imperative that immediate measures be put in place to prevent any acts of looting or manipulation.
“The vacuum created by the departure of the Managing Director must not be allowed to be exploited to erode the company’s financial health, which is critical to the nation’s electricity supply and economic wellbeing,” he added.
He added that the Honourable Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy and the Board must ensure rigorous oversight, transparency, and accountability in all financial transactions during this period.
“The stakes are too high to allow political meddling to jeopardize ECG’s revenue and, by extension, ensuring the collection of enough revenue to pay the Independent Power Generators to guarantee supply.
“This call is critical for action from all responsible parties to secure the integrity of ECG’s financial operations, and to do so with the highest level of vigilance. ECG’s assets belong to the people of Ghana, and they must be protected from any form of political or self-serving interests,” he added.
