Vice Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang says the next NDC government will put structures and policies together to ensure that illegal mining popularly known as galamsey does not destroy river bodies and other water sources like in other countries.
Speaking during a tour of the Western and Central Regions, he said, unlike the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government that has overseen the destruction of many water bodies as a result of illegal mining, the NDC will instead modify the trade to ensure that jobs are created for the youth in the hinterland.
“We are bringing good policies and structures to ensure that illegal mining is done without destroying water bodies like it is done in other advanced countries. In Amenfi East we know there is galamsey happening here but the next NDC government will put good policies together to ensure responsible mining devoid of the destruction of waterbodies while also creating the needed jobs.”
“The NPP government has failed in the fight against illegal mining overseeing the destruction of many waterbodies and rivers. The 24-hour economy policy will also ensure that the needed jobs are created which will also benefit those who cannot do galamsey.
“We are also ready to support individuals who have established businesses to also employ more and run a 24-hour system,” Prof Opoku-Agyemang told the crowd at Nkaaka in the Amenfi Central constituency.
The NDC Vice Presidential candidate also touted the achievement of the NDC in terms of health infrastructure adding that no government has been able to do that.
“We created the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, the University of Development Studies, upgraded healthcare centres to district hospitals and upgraded the regional hospital to suit modern standards. Juxtapose our achievements to that of the NPP and you can see that they come nowhere near us in the sector,” Prof Opoku-Agyemang said.
Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Member of Parliament for Ellembelle and Deputy Minority leader in Parliament criticised the NPP for not heeding its promises of giving allowance to nursing students.
The MP who was addressing students of the Esiama Nursing Training College after the Vice Presidential candidate Naan Jane Opoku Agyemang addressed them urged the nursing students not to hesitate to take money given to them by the NPP as nursing allowances and vote against the. .
The team will later head to the Central Region where the campaign will continue.
