The Dean of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Law School, Prof. Ernest Kofi Abotsi, has expressed concern over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) stance regarding calls for an audit of the Voters’ Register ahead of the December 7, 2024, general elections. Describing the EC’s position as “baffling and troubling,” the law lecturer emphasized the importance of such an audit.
Prof. Abotsi pointed out that even if the EC disagrees with the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) concerns, an audit is a proper mechanism to either confirm or refute allegations. He argued that for a constitutional body like the EC, which must be perceived as fair and neutral, it is essential to take steps that enhance its credibility.
In a tweet dated September 14, 2024, Prof. Abotsi suggested that it is in the EC’s interest to address and dispel the NDC’s claims without turning the issue into a conflict. He concluded by stressing that allegations of a bloated voters’ register can only be resolved through a thorough audit.
