Police release guidelines for NDC’s nationwide demo against EC

The Ghana Police Service has pledged its readiness to maintain law and order during the nationwide protest organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

The protest, set to take place in all 16 regional capitals, is in response to the party’s concerns over alleged discrepancies in the voter register managed by the Electoral Commission (EC).

At a press briefing on Monday, September 16, 2024, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Police Public Affairs, reassured the public that the police are fully equipped to provide security throughout the demonstration.

NDC leaders plan to submit petitions to the EC’s regional offices and headquarters in Accra, as the party continues to express frustration over what they believe to be flaws in the voter register ahead of the 2024 elections.

ACP Ansah-Akrofi emphasized that the NDC has been reminded of its responsibilities under the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491), which outlines the requirements for organizing public demonstrations.

“We would like to once again give assurance that the police will ensure the maintenance of security, law, and order throughout the period of the exercise and beyond,” she stated.
