Dambai (O/R) Sept. 16, GNA – Mr Gabriel Kwame Lemboe, the Oti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said its members would on Tuesday hit the streets of the Nkwanta township in protest of alleged discrepancies in the voters’ register.
He said their objective was to demand that the Electoral Commission (EC) clean the register by ridding it of ghost names to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.
“We find it unhealthy for our democracy especially coming from the body that is mandated to manage our Electoral affairs in this country, we will not agree, EC must clean the voters register through the validation process to present a credible voters register for Ghanaians to have a peaceful election,” he said.
The opposition NDC has been vocal about its concerns regarding the voter register, citing irregularities and discrepancies that could compromise the electoral process.
Mr Lemboe disclosed that the NDC had held a closed-door meeting with the police at Nkwanta South, and that all preparations had been finalised for the upcoming demonstration against the EC tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Mr Felix Ade, the Regional Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed concerns raised by the NDC regarding the electoral register, labelling them as needless.
He said former President John Dramani Mahama had nothing new to offer Ghanaians, saying “his records while in government were nothing to write home about”.
Mr Ade told GNA that, the flagbearer of the NDC had the opportunity to govern the country, but he could not leave behind any meaningful legacy.
Mr Ade said the actions of the NDC were just attempts to discredit the EC and create unnecessary fear among Ghanaians ahead of the December polls.
He expressed confidence in the legitimacy of the register and the EC’S efforts to sanitise the register, urging the NDC to cease their noise making and allow the electoral process to unfold peacefully.
