Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, the Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for the Karaga constituency, has announced a GH¢500,000 scholarship scheme aimed at helping journalists in the Northern Region pursue higher education.
Speaking at the Northern Regional Ghana Journalists Association Awards in Tamale, Dr. Amin Adam expressed concern over the poor working conditions of journalists, despite the essential role they play in shaping public discourse and informing citizens about government policies.
He called on media owners to ensure better compensation for journalists, emphasising that improved welfare will promote professionalism and independence in the media industry.
“I’ve interacted with some of you and with proprietors of various media outlets, and I’m often shocked by the working conditions you endure,” Dr. Amin Adam remarked. “You play a crucial role in carrying the voices of the people to the government, yet the conditions you face are not commensurate with the value you provide.”
While acknowledging the difficult economic climate, the finance minister emphasised the need for media owners to invest in their journalists by providing better pay and benefits.
“I urge media proprietors to take steps to reward you appropriately for the great job you are doing and the service you provide to society.”
Dr. Amin Adam also took the opportunity to highlight the government’s economic achievements, despite challenges, including increased spending on social interventions. “In 2016, we spent nearly GH¢ 1billion on the National Health Programme. Last year, it was GH¢3 billion, and this year we’re spending GH¢6.5 billion under the health insurance scheme. We continue to prioritise investments in social interventions that help reduce poverty.”
The initiative is expected to offer opportunities for media practitioners to upgrade their skills and further their careers.
He also urged journalists to maintain professionalism and use their platforms responsibly, particularly as the country approaches the 2024 general elections, stressing the importance of sustaining peace and stability.
Dr. Amin Adam’s call for improved welfare and his scholarship pledge reflects a broader recognition of the challenges faced by journalists in Ghana, and his remarks have been met with appreciation from the media community in the Northern Region.
