Ghana’s EC can still restore confidence in electoral process

Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, has urged Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) to take immediate action to restore the trust of stakeholders ahead of the upcoming elections.

His call follows concerns raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other groups over irregularities in the voter register, among other issues.

Speaking at the inaugural Diplomatic Honours ceremony in Accra, Dr. Ibn Chambas highlighted the importance of transparency in the electoral process and emphasised that the EC can still regain the confidence of political parties and other stakeholders by taking concrete steps to ensure openness and accountability.

He stated, “It is not too late to work to win the trust and confidence of all parties and stakeholders in the electoral process”

Dr Ibn Chambas added, “Specifically, ensuring the publication of polling station results on the website of the Electoral Commission is one measure that will greatly advance and enhance the credibility and transparency of the process, and this will sound like music to some of our partners here who have made this recommendation time and again.”
