We have lost billions of cedis – Traders affected by Makola fire

Traders whose goods were affected by the fire that destroyed shops in the Zongo Lane area of the Makola market have expressed their sorrow over the losses they have suffered due to the disaster.

They claim to have lost billions of goods and cash as a result of the fire.

“I cannot exactly quantify the amount of goods we have lost, but this runs into billions of cedis. All our things have been destroyed. Even when they asked us to come and take some of the things, but we couldn’t retrieve much,” a trader told GhanaWeb Business on September 10, 2024.

The main building where the fire originated collapsed on September 4, 2024, now poses a danger to residents and traders in the area.

The collapse of the building has raised concerns for neighboring shops and buildings as it is situated in the middle of the market.

When GhanaWeb Business visited the scene on September 10, 2024, the fire had been fully extinguished, but the affected structures were in ruins.

Residents mentioned that after an assessment by the Ghana National Fire Service, it was determined that the building would need to be demolished.
