NPP member quits to run as independent parliamentary candidate

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Yendi constituency, Hussain Abdul Karim Labaani, has submitted his nomination to run as an independent parliamentary candidate in the December Polls.

Labaani’s decision comes after he and other disgruntled NPP members expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s parliamentary primaries and the National Executive Committee’s imposition of the current MP, Alhaji Faruq Ali Mahama.

Labaani cited the imposition and unfulfilled promises of the MP as reasons for contesting independently. He expressed confidence in his ability to win the Yendi seat, pledging strong leadership and urging supporters to vote for him.

Labaani’s supporters also criticised the MP’s leadership, echoing concerns over imposed representation and calling for change.

“The people choose the leader, not the leader chooses himself,” Labaani emphasised, clarifying that his decision is not a rebellion against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, but rather a call for democratic representation.

He stated, “The Member of Parliament for Yendi, who’s in the person of Alhaji Faruq Ali Mahama was imposed on us and for that matter, the rule of law does not order that.”

“For that matter we have come out, especially me to let them understand that is the people that choose the leader, not the leader chooses himself. I’m not against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”
