The late coach Oko Aryee
Ghana’s former Men’s U17 and Women’s national team coach, Oko Aryee has passed away at the 37 Military Hospital.
The 83-year-old died on Monday, August 12, 2024, after a short illness.
The late Oko Aryee first gained prominence by leading Ghana’s U-17 team to qualify for the 1992 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
His exceptional coaching nurtured talents like Osei Kuffour, Mohammed Gargo, Odartey Lamptey, and Yaw Preko, laying the groundwork for future successes.
Although the team was later managed by German coach Otto Pfister during the tournament, Aryee’s role in developing these young players is fondly remembered.
Beyond his achievements with youth teams, Aryee’s last major role was as head coach of the Black Queens at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
His leadership showcased the growth of women’s football in Ghana and brought pride to the national team.
The Ghanaian football community is deeply saddened by his passing. Aryee was more than a coach; he was a mentor and pioneer in the sport.
