Elorm Aba and Portia Asare
Ghanaian actress Elorm Aba has given more insights on why she criticized fellow actress Portia Asare for her comments about the prevalence of juju (black magic) in the Kumawood movie industry.
It could be recalled that earlier in July 2024, Portia Asare in an interview claimed that ‘juju,’ hatred and envy amongst stakeholders in Kumawood led to its collapse.
Her comments were not taken kindly by some of her colleagues including Elorm Aba and Okomfo Kolege who criticised her.
Speaking in a live studio discussion on Onua TV in September 2024, Elorm Aba, who has extensive experience in the industry as both an actress and producer, acknowledged the existence of juju but argued that it is not the sole reason for the challenges faced by the Kumawood industry.
Aba explained that such statements made by Portia Asare could deter potential investors and newcomers, further harming the industry.
According to her, Portia Asare should have focused on constructive discussions about improving the industry instead of complaining about ‘juju’.
“We all know that there is something like juju in the industry, everyone knows, it’s been there for a long time. But we are trying to revive the Kumawood movie industry. You can’t just come from somewhere and claim that Kumawood collapsed because of juju.
“You claim the Kumawood industry is dead but you are shooting a movie in Kumasi. If you believe that the industry is dead, why are you still in it?
“Saying something like that will deter people from venturing into it and rather kill Kumawood.
“She should have said things to improve the industry, she should have talked about the equipment and the finances we need. Things that will help grow the industry. Not things like juju that will scare investors away,” she said.
Aba highlighted that other film industries, like Nigeria’s, also face issues but continue to work towards growth.
She further explained that her reaction was because as an experienced industry member, Asare’s words carry significant weight and should have been used to uplift rather than undermine the Kumawood movie industry.
“Look at Nigeria, they also have issues, yet everyone is working to grow their movie industry.
“So if you get a platform, use it to help improve the industry that you are still a part of. Not talking about juju and all these things that will rather bring it down,” she added.
