No 80-year-old pensioner is receiving GH¢300 – SSNIT Chief Actuary –

The Chief Actuary of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has dismissed claims that an 80-year-old pensioner is receiving a monthly pension of GH¢300.

Joseph Poku clarified that the minimum pension of GH¢300 has been in place for about four to five years and insisted that no one at that age is receiving such a low amount.

“Although not challenging the information given, based on the data and information I have, there is nobody on pension and about 80 years old that we are paying GH¢300. It won’t happen,” Mr Poku stated.

Mr Poku called for the details of the pensioner reportedly receiving GH₵300 to be forwarded to him for review, insisting it is not possible.

This follows a pensioner lamenting that her cousin of about 82 years who worked in Ghana, takes home GH₵300.

The Chief Actuary of SSNIT explained that pensioners who earned GH₵300 when the minimum pension was first declared have had their pensions indexed, resulting in an increased amount the following year.

“So the GH¢300 becomes the new entrants – those coming to pension now. For this year, if you are going to pension and your salary is so low – let’s say the minimum wage and you pay your contributions on it and your best three years make it below the minimum pension, then, we pay you the GH¢300,” he explained.
