Clean energy transition must benefit resource producing countries

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor has called for a fair balance between the quest to tackle climate change and the continuous exploitation of mineral resources.

The global campaign to tackle climate change may affect the traditional approach to mineral exploration, necessitating a shift in policy. This, according to the Minister, requires a fine balance aimed at benefiting mineral-producing countries.

Speaking at the 7th edition of the Mining on Top Africa Summit in Paris, France, Mr Jinapor said producing nations must have a way of benefiting from the resources while abiding by the green energy transition.

“This transition must, however, be fair, just inclusive and carry everyone along. It must not be pursued in a manner that only benefits the consumers of clean energy- investors in their home countries. But it must be done in a way that benefits the ultimate producers of the minerals required for the transition who have consistently suffered, the historical injustice [which] is commonly referred to as resource curse”, Mr Jinapor noted.

According to the Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Damongo, “the need for balance and indeed equity is critical for sustainability, and inclusive development.”

He underscored the need for a green energy transition which he says is, “the only way to promote sustainability and the expectation and use of our natural resource endowments.”

The Mining on Top Africa Summit which is in its 7th year is organised by AMETrade Ltd and aims to introduce reforms to the mining sector on the continent.

The summit brought together leading experts, industry professionals, government officials and influencers from around the world, with a focus on global trends.

Over 200 delegates from more than 20 countries converged for the summit.
